LEGAL ACTION WORLDWIDE

Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) provides high quality, innovative legal advice and representation on human rights violations in conflict-affected areas.

LAW’s ground-breaking Rohingya Crisis programme seeks to ensure meaningful Rohingya participation in the ongoing international justice processes pertaining to their treatment in Myanmar, including: the case before the ICC and ICJ.

As part of this programme, LAW wanted to help inform the Bangladesh based Rohingya refugeest about their legal rights and the various legal actions being taken on their behalf.

THE PROBLEM

The Rohingya refugees living in camps at Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh have been waiting to "go home" to Myanmar for the last 6 years.

The global community has been outraged at their treatment by the Myanmar Army.

A number of cases have been taken to the International Criminal Court and International  Court of Justice on their behalf, however, the court's mechanisms can be slow moving and confusing.

The refugees needed to better understand the battles being fought on their behalf to manage their expectations about potential outcomes and their family's futures.

CONCEPT

Working with the legal experts at LAW and Rohingya community representatives, Citron Violet created 5 animated videos which broke down the complex issues for the refugee community.

The animations covered the basics of the ICC and ICJ, detailed the crimes committed against the Rohingya, reviewed similar cases around the world where crimes against Muslim communities had been taken to the ICJ and ICC and detailed how victims can get involved in the various cases.

Due to the lack of laptops and mobiles within the refugee camp, the animations were delivered to the community via tablets.  In addition a print version with annotated frames of each video were distributed

RESULTS

There is unfortunately no way to truly understand the impact of an educational campaign within a closed community like a refugee camp.

We did however have very positive feedback from the Rohingya community representatives, who said that our depictions of Rohingyas within the animations were viewed as authentic and relatable.  The refugee community consider themselves better informed about both their legal rights, the efforts being made on their behalf and the potential outcomes.

Sadly there is no happy ending in sight for the Rohingya community.  They have however been empowered to fight for their legal rights and respective futures.
